Justin Reid well aware of his unfortunate role when Chiefs last faced Texans in playoffs
In the late afternoon on Jan. 12, 2020, the Houston Texans held a 24-0 lead over the Chiefs with less than 10 minutes to go before halftime at Arrowhead Stadium.
Few watching at that exact moment would have guessed it, but just three weeks later the Chiefs would win Super Bowl LIV at Hard Rock Stadium.
Heck, who could have expected the Chiefs would take the lead by halftime of that game against the Texans in an AFC Divisional playoff game? In one of the greatest comebacks in playoff history, the Chiefs scored six straight touchdowns, including four in the second quarter, and thumped Houston 51-31.
There’s a good chance that game will be mentioned Saturday when the Chiefs and Texans square off again in an AFC Divisional playoff game at Arrowhead Stadium.
That 2020 comeback was fueled in part by a play involving Chiefs safety Justin Reid. He was with Houston at the time and the key player in a fake punt that went awry.
After the Chiefs scored their first touchdown, the Texans went three-and-out, but they didn’t end up punting. Reid took a direct snap on fourth-and-4 in punt formation but was stopped short by Daniel Sorensen.
Three plays later, Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes threw a touchdown pass to Travis Kelce to cut the Texans’ advantage to 10 and the comeback was in hyperdrive.
A Chiefs fan shared a clip of that play by Sorensen on X and Reid had a great response.
“Guess it’s that time of year that this makes its annual circulation,” wrote Reid, who added a laughing emoji. “Great play by Dan. Glad I’m on the right side of history now”
That play — and Reid’s response — were both shared on X.
