The Chiefs are back in KC after enduring plane delays coming and going to Denver
“The best laid plans of mice and men often go awry,” as the saying goes, and the Chiefs learned that over the weekend.
The original itinerary for the Chiefs’ trip to Denver had them departing Saturday afternoon from Kansas City and returning Sunday evening.
Both legs of the trip hit a snag thanks to the winter storm that enveloped Kansas City.
Mechanical issues with a plane on Saturday were followed by icy weather that caused Kansas City International Airport to shut down in the afternoon. That forced the Chiefs to wait four hours before departing for Denver.
The Chiefs finally landed in Denver in the early evening on Saturday. Shortly before Sunday’s game against the Broncos, the decision was made to spend another night in Denver because of the blizzard in KC.
The team was scheduled to depart Denver at 7:55 p.m. on Sunday and arrive back in Kansas City at 8:05 p.m. Although the ice was no longer an issue, the foot of snow that fell in KC caused hundreds of flight cancellations at Kansas City International Airport.
And so, the Chiefs headed to their team hotel in Denver rather than the airport following Sunday’s game.
There was another delay on Monday morning, but this was much shorter. The team plane was held up for a brief time as it was taxiing from the gate. However, the Chiefs plane made it back to KC shortly before 1 p.m., but 15 hours and 22 minutes later than scheduled.
Here’s a timeline of how the Chiefs’ trip unfolded.
2 p.m. Saturday: Scheduled departure from Kansas City (delayed)
5:20 p.m. Saturday: Actual departure time from Kansas City
6:49 p.m. Saturday: Arrival time in Denver
3:25 p.m. Sunday: Start of Chiefs-Broncos game
7:55 p.m. Sunday: Scheduled departure from Denver (delayed by weather)
9:25 a.m. Monday: Chiefs leave hotel via buses for Denver airport, per NFL Network’s Peter Schrager
10:55 a.m. Monday: Chiefs plane leaves the gate and taxis on runway
11:30 a.m. Monday: Departure time from Denver airport
12:42 p.m. Monday: Chiefs plane arrives in Kansas City
The good news for the Chiefs is they don’t have a road game in the AFC playoffs.
