Doubt has been cast on whether Yogi Berra actually uttered the words “It Ain’t Over Til It’s Over,” but that phrase has become part of the American lexicon.

But those words weren’t spoken Monday night at Swinney Center. The Kansas City Roos men’s basketball team crushed Calvary University 119-19 in a game where the outcome was determined in the first half.

Calvary, which is located in Kansas City near Belton, is part of the Midwest Christian College Conference.

The Roos scored the game’s first 11 points before Ryan Ulrichs hit a 3-pointer for the Warriors. Kansas City then ripped off 20 straight points for a 31-3 lead just eight minutes into the contest.

It was 64-9 at the half after Calvary’s Matthew Flores hit a 3-pointer before the horn. The Roos had 37 rebounds in the first 20 minutes, the highest mark in a half in program history, the school said.

The Roos didn’t take their foot off the pedal, shooting 65% from the floor and 60% on 3-pointers in the second half.

“Yes, you keep score and you play for wins, but once that was decided then you’ve got to play for the respect of the game and I thought our guys did that,” Roos coach Marvin Menzies said in a video on the school website. “There were no shenanigans and extra talking or etiquette stuff I needed to worry about. They were professional, they handled their business and they did what they needed to do.”

Point guard Gob Gob’s layup with 1 minute, 29 seconds to play put the Roos up by a hundred and marked the game’s final points.

It was the largest margin of victory in school history, topping an 88-point win over Kansas Christian College on Nov. 8. Kansas City said it was the first Division I team ever to win two games by 85 or more points in the same season.

Here are some other stats of note from the game.

  • Calvary’s 19 points were the fewest scored by a Roos opponent. The old record was 23 by Rockhurst in 1983.
  • The Roos’ 30 steals were a school record (old mark: 22 against William Jewell in 2014)
  • KC’s 18 3-pointers were a team record (topping the 17 against Southern Utah in 2003).
  • The Roos shot 54.3% from the field compared to Calvary’s 14.0%. KC made 50% of its three-pointers to 17.2% for Calvary.
  • KC made 68.4% of its free throws and the Warriors missed their only two attempts.
  • The Roos outrebounded Calvary 56-27, had more steals (30 to 4) and forced 34 turnovers.

Seven Roos players scored in double figures, led by Jamar Brown, who had 22 points in just 15 minutes of action. Cameron Faas added 17 points, Jayson Petty scored 16 and Ring Nyeri had 12.
