Coach Sean Payton’s preparation for the Broncos’ game against the Chiefs at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium included checking the weather forecast and the KU football schedule.

While talking with reporters this week, Payton noted the Kansas football team will be playing Iowa State at Arrowhead Stadium on Saturday afternoon. Kickoff is at 2:30 p.m., less than 24 hours before the Chiefs face the Broncos on Sunday.

The forecast from the National Weather Service says there is an 80% chance of rain showers and possibly a thunderstorm on Saturday. “New precipitation amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch,” it wrote on the NWS website, “except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.”

The NWS outlook for Sunday is a high of 61 degrees with winds up to 10 mph, which is remarkably close to what Payton said earlier this week at a news conference.

“I think, look, the weather forecast Sunday: 59 degrees, 10 miles an hour winds,” Broncos coach Sean Payton told reporters. “I do think the field will be something we have to pay attention to. It rained last night. They also have a college game Saturday on this grass surface. The weather for Saturday is a heavy rain forecast so we’ll have to make sure we’re prepared for that.”

A reporter noted that when he coached the Saints, New Orleans played road games in Tampa, Florida, where the University of South Florida and Buccaneers play.

“This is a little uniquely different in that, not that they played Monday night and it rained, but I know there’s a college game there and it’ll be a different type grass (than in Tampa),” Payton said.

Kickoff for Sunday’s Chiefs-Broncos game is set for noon.
