Chiefs’ Travis Kelce: Patrick Mahomes’ running style is akin to emu in viral video
NFL pundits praised quarterback Patrick Mahomes’ performance Sunday in the Chiefs’ win at San Francisco, saying it showed his big-game ability even when he doesn’t have big passing stats.
Mahomes torched the 49ers with his legs, including this scintillating 33-yard dash along the sideline.
On the latest episode of the New Heights podcast, Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce and his brother/co-host, Jason, talked about that rush and Mahomes’ 1-yard TD run through a 49ers defender.
They also tried to describe Mahomes’ running style and it was hilarious.
The Kelces began by noting ESPN’s Pat McAfee had shared a meme from “Forrest Gump” about Mahomes. They disagreed with that comparison.
“I don’t think Pat really runs like Forrest,” Jason Kelce said.
Travis added: “He doesn’t have any knee drive. Are you kidding? That’s all that Forrest has. Pat runs like he doesn’t have any knees.”
Jason called Mahomes’ running style “loosey goosey.”
Travis Kelce then made a funny comparison.
“I’ll say this, there’s a meme or there’s a GIF online right now of an ostrich running away from a dog,” Travis said. “And he’s just like weaving in and out. I’m just like I mean, that’s Pat Mahomes. A little top heavy with the skinny legs, and he’s out there just kind of like leaning and I mean, he’s scampering, though. He’s out of there, the ostrich can roll now.”
Travis broke out laughing but Jason said: “Dog, this is so accurate.”
Here is the video, which is actually of an emu.
Kelce defends Mahomes, too
Mahomes was criticized in some circles for that sideline run because fans thought he was pretending to run out of bounds to deke a defender. Barstool Sports wrote a story saying the NFL needs to outlaw that type of move.
Jason Kelce mentioned the detractors, but that irked Travis Kelce. He said people missed a key element of the play.
“Get out of here,” Travis said. “You watch it again, Kareem (Hunt) pushes the guy out of bounds. Watch it again. Kareem is literally over there in the flat. ... Kareem sees 53 (Dee Winters), pushes him, he loses his balance, and then gets in the way of 90. I’m not trying to hear this, man.”
“Touché,” Jason said. “I’m sorry I didn’t see the push.”
“Some quarterbacks definitely take advantage of that,” Travis Kelce said. “I think Pat has been pretty solid with he’s getting out of bounds. He’s doing it because he can’t get any more yards with his legs. He’s not going to try and trick a guy of going out of bounds and then do it. It’s like the old fake slide. I just don’t see Pat doing it.”
