Cornerback Jaylen Watson thrived after stepping into a starting role this season for the Chiefs, but he was dealt a setback during the win over the 49ers on Sunday.

Watson suffered an ankle fracture and will miss extended time. The Chiefs haven’t announced the extent of Watson’s injury, but the NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport was the one who reported Watson had a broken ankle.

And Watson himself shared that he had received bad news with a single emoji in an X post: a broken heart.

Chiefs fans responded with messages of support for Watson, as did teammate Justin Reid.

“Love you brother Keep your mental strong, always know you will be back and better than ever!!” Reid wrote.

Watson, who was selected in the seventh round of the 2022 NFL Draft out of Washington State, had allowed just 16 completions this season. Pro Football Reference’s stats show opposing quarterbacks had a 75.4 rating when they threw his way.

Fans sent words of encouragement, too. Here is just a snippet of the things they said on X.
