Ten bonkers statistics to come out of the Chiefs’ Super Bowl LVIII victory
The Chiefs secured their place in NFL history on Sunday by winning a second straight Super Bowl championship, their third in five years.
That alone is noteworthy because it’s just the ninth time a team has won consecutive Super Bowls, and only eight franchises can claim that distinction (the Steelers did it twice).
After the Chiefs were handed their fourth Lombardi Trophy (only four franchises have won more), there were a number of crazy statistics about the Chiefs, their season and quarterback Patrick Mahomes.
Here are 10 of them.
1. Historic defense, part I
CBS Sports’ Jeff Kerr noted the Chiefs defense did something unseen in NFL history during the playoffs.
The Chiefs are the first team, he wrote, to beat four of the top six teams in scoring offense during a postseason run.
2. Historic defense, part II
The Chiefs’ defense wasn’t simply good in the playoffs. It had the most games allowing 28 points or fewer in a single season.
The Chiefs did that in all 21 of their games (17 regular season, four postseason), passing the previous record of 19 — held by several teams including the 2000 Baltimore Ravens, per “Good Morning Football.”
3. Comeback kings
The Chiefs’ three Super Bowl championships in the past five years have come despite trailing by 10 points in each game. A double-digit comeback doesn’t happen often in the Super Bowl — only seven times ever.
4. Mahomes is clutch
Mahomes’ record when trailing by seven or more points in a playoff game blows away every other quarterback, as former ESPN anchor Trey Wingo noted.
Mahomes’ Chiefs are 9-2 in those games. Tom Brady, next best on the list, was 10-11.
5. Mahomes’ place in history
Mahomes’ playoff winning percentage (15-3, .833) ranks second in NFL history behind the Packers’ Bart Starr (9-1, .900).
6. Mahomes on the final drive
Opta Stats dug out this amazing statistic. In the past 30 years, no quarterback had gone 8-for-8 or better passing with 27 or more rushing yards on any single drive in any game (regular season or postseason).
That is, until Mahomes did it in overtime of the Super Bowl.
7. Number 9
X user Craig Stout noted the Chiefs have won seven straight postseason games and have nine playoff victories in the past three years alone.
From the franchise’s formation in 1960 until Mahomes’ first game as a starter, the Chiefs had nine total playoff victories.
8. Passing Elway
On a night in which former Broncos quarterback John Elway made sure the Chiefs got the Lombardi Trophy, he was passed by Mahomes in career playoff passing yards.
1. 13,400, Tom Brady (48 games) 2001-22
2. 7,339, Peyton Manning (27 games) 1999-15
3. 5,972, Ben Roethlisberger (23 games) 2004-21
4. 5,894, Aaron Rodgers (22 games) 2007-21
5. 5,855, Brett Favre (24 games) 1993-09
6. 5,772, Joe Montana (23 games) 1981-94
7. 5,366, Drew Brees (18 games) 2004-20
8. 5,135, Patrick Mahomes (18 games) 2018-23
9. 4,964, John Elway (22 games) 1983-98
10. 4,510, Dan Marino (18 games) 1983-99
9. Passing Manning, too
Mahomes also passed Hall of Famer Peyton Manning on the list of most playoff career touchdown passes.
1. 88, Tom Brady (48 games) 2001-22
2. 45, Joe Montana (23 games) 1981-94
2. 45, Aaron Rodgers (22 games) 2007-21
4. 44, Brett Favre (24 games) 1993-09
5. 41, Patrick Mahomes (18 games) 2018-23
6. 40, Peyton Manning (40 games) 1999-15
7. 37, Drew Brees (15 games) 2004-20
10. At home in Vegas
Sports Illustrated’s Matt Verderame pointed out the Mahomes-Andy Reid combination has had more success at Allegiant Stadium than any Raiders coach/quarterback combo.
That Chiefs duo has five wins at the Raiders’ new venue.
