Patrick Mahomes is in unfamiliar territory, and I’m not talking about the struggles the Chiefs have faced on offense this season.

No, this has to do with Mahomes being fined by the NFL for his actions at the end of the Chiefs’ 20-17 loss to the Bills on Dec. 10 and his postgame comments. The NFL is making Mahomes pay $50,000 for referee criticism and “unsportsmanlike conduct.”

Mahomes’ behavior seemed out of place to nearly anyone who has watched him or the Chiefs. That’s because Mahomes is the kind of guy who actually praises opponents when they deliver a big hit.

Being levied a fine by the NFL is something new for Mahomes, who was selected by the Chiefs in the first round of the 2017 Draft.

NBC Sports’ Mike Florio reported Mahomes is deciding whether to appeal the penalty.

“I honestly don’t even know how that process works,” Mahomes told Florio. “I think it’s the first time I’ve ever been fined. But I know mentally I’m just gonna move on and play. Now that the game’s over and I have an extra day, I’ll figure out how that process goes.”

Later in that story, Mahomes said he wasn’t surprised to receive the fine.

“I knew that I let my emotions get the best of me,” Mahomes said. “As a man and as a person, you have to deal with the consequences of your actions. And that’s how I was always taught growing up. And I knew that something was coming. I didn’t know what it was going to be and then the fine came, and all I can do now is move on and become a better person about it and not let that scenario happen again.”
