Chiefs’ Travis Kelce jokes he blacked out before making ‘Saturday Night Live’ cameo
Near the end of the “Saturday Night Live” skit poking fun at the NFL’s mania over Taylor Swift, there was a murmur in the crowd at Studio 8H at Rockefeller Plaza.
The audience likely got to see Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce before the viewers at home. But when the cameras cut to Kelce, the crowd went wild. It was an indication of how big a star Kelce has become.
In the newest episode of Kelce’s “New Heights” podcast, he shared insight into how he got the cameo over the weekend and his time at “Saturday Night Live.” Kelce said he likely flubbed his lines.
“I don’t even remember what I said. I blacked out,” Kelce said. “As soon as they cued to me the entire place erupted, which was very overwhelming and I’m not even sure if I said anything. I actually walked off and said, ‘Did I say anything at all?’ (They) were like, ‘Yeah, no, you killed it.’ I watched it over and I still don’t really know if I said what I was supposed to.”
Kelce uttered simply: “Yeah, please” during the skit, but it was more than enough to catch the attention of fans of the show and the NFL.
Swift came to the Chiefs’ game on Thursday night and then she and Kelce jetted to the Big Apple.
Kelce said they planned to attend “Saturday Night Live” to see the musical guest, Ice Spice. Swift and Kelce then make cameos at the behest of producer Lorne Michaels.
“We showed up at ‘SNL’ having the idea of going in support of Ice Spice,” Kelce said. “Her and Taylor are good friends. I’ve always wanted to meet Pete Davidson (that night’s host). I’ve been a fan of his for quite a while since he was on ‘SNL.’
“I’ll tell you what, man, it was electric to be back in that place. There is just something about being in that room and just it being their first episode this season. I had such a freaking blast, man. It was a star-studded back room. I’m not the one to throw around names, so I won’t. But it was awesome man. It was awesome. And Lorne Michaels, thank you for having us. It was a pleasure.”
Kelce was the show’s guest host in March, and he was happy to reconnect with the cast and crew.. He would love to return as host someday, perhaps after another Chiefs Super Bowl title (or if his brother Jason and the Eagles win).
“It was fun catching up with everybody over at ‘SNL,’ man. I missed those guys, guys and girls, I should say,” Kelce said. “And hopefully, you know, I win it or Jason wins it and we find ourselves back.”
