In ‘Quarterback,’ Patrick and Brittany Mahomes share how they first became a couple
In the first episode of Netflix’s “Quarterback” docuseries, viewers get the scoop on how the childhood friendship between Patrick and Brittany Mahomes turned to love.
Mahomes said they first met when he was in seventh grade.
“She was a grade above me. I was like the best friend in the friendzone forever,” Mahomes said in the show. “I used to walk her to class and was trying to flirt. When I was a sophomore in high school and she was a junior, I got her a rose and I was kinda like I had a crush on her. But I was getting the rose is a joke, but like kind of as a joke (in) quotation for Valentine’s Day.”
Brittany picked up the story and said: “He thought it was a joke and I thought it was the cutest thing in the world. And then everyone at our lunch table started chanting like, ‘Kiss him, kiss him,’ and made it really awkward cause we were just friends. So, yeah, that’s kind of what started it and then I thought it was cute.
“So they were chanting and I thought it was kind of awkward and it was funny. And then I was like, ‘OK, well, this guy’s actually kind of cute. Maybe I do like him.’ So then we just started talking and then started dating.”
Here is the clip and includes Patrick Mahomes yelling at his dogs, who were fence-fighting with neighbor dogs.
The couple dated through the rest of high school and college, even though they attended different universities.
They were married last year in Hawaii and they now have two kids: 2-year-old Sterling and 7-month hold Patrick III (Bronze).
Family time
The second episode of “Quarterback” shows the family at an apple orchard. It was filmed before Bronze was born.
“I want to spend as much time as I can with my family,” Patrick Mahomes said. “I don’t want to miss these days of Sterling growing up. The way that she brightens my day, even after having a bad day when you see that smile, you can’t be sad.”
There’s a nice sequence as the couple laugh and enjoy time with their daughter.
“After games whether it was a win or a loss it’s really nice to get him away from football and spend time with our family,” says Brittany Mahomes, one of the Kansas City Current, co-owners. “You know we really don’t get much family time all together during season. So any little free time that we get, really getting out of the house and spending it with our family, is most important.”
Later, the family was shown at Children’s Mercy Park for a Current game.
“This is like her signature: chilling and letting dad feed her chicken fingers,” Brittany Mahomes said of Sterling.
Patrick Mahomes spoke about the Current and then talked about one reason for his love of his wife.
“Brittany is a co-owner of the Kansas City Current, probably the most progressive, the most empowering franchise in women’s soccer to this day,” Mahomes said.
He added: “I think that’s what makes me love her so much is that she’s a competitor at heart just like I am.”
Bronze was born in November, and Brittany Mahomes had the day of the birth on a calendar, although at one point she pushes the delivery back 30 minutes.
Patrick Mahomes was impressed with his wife.
“Brittany’s a champ, man. She liked waited until the last moment,” he said in the show. “She was like, ‘All right, it was time to go have the baby now and she went out there and then the baby was here, and then she’s back moving again the next day.”
It’s clear from the docuseries just how much the couple love each other.
