Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes’ workout regimen with Bobby Stroupe shown in Netflix series

There is a moment of foreshadowing in Episode 3 of the Netflix docuseries “Quarterback” that Chiefs fans will recognize right away.

That episode title is “Kings of Pain” and it shows Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes working out with his personal trainer, Bobby Stroupe. Mahomes said he convinced Stroupe to move to Kansas City so they could work together.

“If you look at the beginning of my career, when Bobby wasn’t here, I had a couple of high ankle sprains, I had a couple of little injuries here,” Mahomes says in the episode. “And knock on wood since Bobby has been here, we’ve kind of gotten rid of those things.”

Mahomes didn’t actually knock on wood, and as any Chiefs fan knows, he suffered a high ankle sprain during the playoff win over the Jaguars.

“Quarterback” shows Mahomes pleading with Reid to stay in that playoff game. The series then takes viewers inside the work done to get Mahomes ready for the AFC Championship Game.

But before that episode, we got a closer look at what Mahomes does when working out with Stroupe. Mahomes notes that he works with Stroupe three days a week away from the Chiefs’ facility.

“We train to be able to move in as many ways as possible,” Stroupe says in the show. “I believe in armoring the body in different movements to make sure that you are prepared to go where you don’t want to go. You have to be comfortable in those uncomfortable positions or you’re gonna be hurt.

“There is something that we focus on called tissue resilience, working in different positions, to where his tissues literally have to create density and have to adapt to these positions I’m putting him in. And those things give you a little more of a resistance to injury.”

Mahomes says in the series that he had injuries to his wrist, thumb, quad and a swollen knee during the 2022 season. There was also a nasty bruise on his thigh from the season opener at Arizona.

Stroupe gets Mahomes ready to play by having a different focus for each of their sessions. It’s their ABCs.

“’A’ day is focused on rejuvenation renewing the tissue. This involves a lot of manipulating the body in space, checking to see if everything works the way it should, get to zero, get the base,” Stroupe said.

“’B’ day is focused on movement literacy and power development. So that Wednesday I want him moving in the way he needs to move on Sunday.

“’C’ day is full speed. I want him to have movements that are faster than any movement he’d do in the game. Because then the game is gonna feel very slow. It’s gonna feel very comfortable.”

Mahomes the owl

Ever since Mahomes entered the league, fans have been amazed by his vision and ability to find receivers all over the field.

Stroupe said he tries to help Mahomes become an owl.

“There are quarterbacks that when they’re rolling right, they can’t turn their head and some that can. The same athlete maybe when they roll left, they can’t,” Stroupe said in the show. “There’s many quarterbacks that have deficits going both ways. Patrick keeps his head perfectly still like an owl and (can) still be able to visually see what’s going on here and also manipulate his body due to the mobility that he has in his spine.

“How fast can you rotate and swivel that part of your body independently of the rest of your body? Patrick has strengthened his spine. ... And his hip-shoulder separation is the best that I’ve seen. I’ve worked with some of the hardest throwers in the sport of baseball and at the quarterback position. It’s incredible.”
