For Pete's Sake

The latest ‘Ted Lasso’ episode includes a story about the Chiefs-Broncos rivalry

For fans of the hit Apple+ television show “Ted Lasso,” here’s a question to ponder. Which is greater: the number of awards the show has won since it debuted or the amount of Kansas City Easter eggs creators have hidden in episodes?

According to the International Movie Database, “Ted Lasso” has collected 76 awards including 11 Emmys. But there also have been a large number of Kansas City references made through the two-plus seasons.

Some have been small and others you really couldn’t miss.

In the latest episode of “Ted Lasso,” there was a really big one. (Warning: Spoilers to follow)

A player told teammates he was gay during halftime of the fictional AFC Richmond soccer team’s game. Ted Lasso, who is played by Jason Sudeikis, then shared a story about being a Chiefs fan who had a friend of another AFC West team.

“When I was growing up back in Kansas City, I had a buddy named Stevie Juhl,” Lasso said. “He was a huge Denver Broncos fan. But we were all growing up smack dab in the middle of Chiefs country. So he used to catch a lot of guff for it. But me, I told him it didn’t affect the way I felt about him at all. I told him that I didn’t care. And I didn’t. But then in 1997 98, he had to watch back-to-back Super Bowls with the Denver Broncos in them all by himself.

“First one, he ate an entire seven-layer dip from Price Chopper all by himself. Big ol’ thing and it just wrecked his stomach. Apparently, he destroyed the toilet in his parents basement. I remember the rumor at the time being that he caused $9,000 worth of damage. Can you imagine? To a toilet, nine thousand bucks? The next year, he did the exact same thing, all by himself. He must have thought it was good luck or something. I don’t know, because I wasn’t there. Because I didn’t care.

“But I should have cared. You know? I should have supported him. I should have been at his house, both them years. Sharing that seven-layer dip with my friend while his garbage-ass team wins back-to-back Super Bowls.”

The player then asked: “Coach, did you just compare being gay to being a Denver Broncos fan?”

Ted Lasso responded: “You know what? I did and I regret it. I’m sorry about that.”

And then another player on the team asked: “What the (heck) are Denver Broncos?”

Sudeikis, who is a co-creator/writer/producer of “Ted Lasso” had to love writing that scene.

You can see it below (but be warned, there is cursing).

Price Chopper was thrilled at the mention on the show, and the supermarket shared this on Twitter.
