Former Chiefs quarterback worked as a ‘football coordinator’ for new ‘Top Gun’ movie
Football, not volleyball, is the sport featured in “Top Gun: Maverick,” the sequel to the popular 1980s movie. But there is one similarity.
Stars in the original movie played sand volleyball, and the sequel returns to the beach for a game of “dogfight football.”
One problem: actor Danny Ramirez wasn’t familiar with football, as he told USA Today. Ramirez, who plays Fanboy, was more of a soccer player, the paper noted.
“At first it was like, ‘How does this game work?’ “ Ramirez told USA Today. “We found some flow and were able to set up some classic moments.”
Turns out Ramirez received tutelage from former Chiefs quarterback Matt Moore.
Moore, who was part of the Chiefs’ Super Bowl LIV-winning team, retired following the 2019 season.
But he may have found a new gig in Hollywood, because Moore helped Ramirez and the rest of the cast of “Top Gun: Maverick,” which has made more than $1 billion worldwide.
“Our football coordinator ex NFL QB #MattMoore said I had the best arm,” Ramirez tweeted.
“@NFL gimme a shot at the average Joe NFL combine next year. I still got it.”
Glen Powell, who plays “Hangman,” told Men’s Health the football scene was one of the first things he thought about after securing his role in the movie.
“I knew the stakes were high,” Powell said. “In the days leading up, there was more male insecurity than you’ve ever seen on any set ever. .. And probably more coconut oil than even on ‘Magic Mike’.”
But Powell told USA Today he at least had a leg up on Ramirez going into filming. Powell knew about football. Dogfight football, however, is another story.
“I played football growing up in Texas,” Powell says. “And I don’t get the rules of dogfight football. They make absolutely no sense.”
