For Pete's Sake

Chiefs QBs Patrick Mahomes, Shane Buechele competed in an unusual training game

Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes was blessed with a right arm that allows him to throw pinpoint passes 60-plus yards downfield.

It’s one reason why Mahomes has been a star since taking over the Chiefs’ starting quarterback job in 2018. His eidetic memory is another factor as to why he’s been a success. Ditto for his intense competitive drive.

Mahomes hates to lose, no matter the sport. He’s competitive in golf, basketball, stationary bikes and table tennis.

And then there is this game, whatever it might be called, in which Mahomes faced off against fellow Chiefs quarterback Shane Buechele:

As you can see, Mahomes and Buechele were wearing flag-football flags, there was a ball and each player was defending a pole from being touched by the ball. And it appeared they couldn’t run forward through the two big hoops on the playing field.

The game was devised by Mahomes’ personal trainer, Bobby Stroupe. He’s the one who shared the video above and he also explained the rules and the point of the training exercise.

“The rules to this game were simple,” Stroupe wrote.

“Win by; scoring the ball by touching it to the Pole base OR pull opponents flag ONLY when they have possession of the ball

“Shane / Patrick completely made up throwing the ball off the wall & over the opponents head w/ out example. This is best case scenario for the ‘game’

“This is an advanced drill & was only 1 rep in the course of a structured workout w/ other training initiatives.”

Here is another competition that apparently required the pursuer to grab the opponents flag, and Mahomes poked fun at Buechele.

Ah, but Buechele tweeted a video that showed him winning and had a bit of fun with Mahomes.
