ESPN free-agent projection has three high-profile players as being good fits for Chiefs
When wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. became a free agent in November, we asked Chiefs fans if they wanted him in Kansas City.
Although the poll is not scientific, 56% of fans said yes, 40% said no and 4% were undecided. But Beckham instead signed a one-year deal with the Rams, and may have been on his way to a Super Bowl LVI MVP award when he left the game with a knee injury.
Could Beckham end up with the Chiefs in 2022? ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler and Matt Bowen, looked at the best fits for the top 50 NFL free agents, and they have OBJ signing with Kansas City.
Fowler wrote: “He has to sign with a contender with high-level quarterback play, and Kansas City needs juice opposite Tyreek Hill. Plus, tight end Travis Kelce turns 33 in October. But any team interested would have to consider the injury history, after Beckham suffered an injury to his left knee in the Super Bowl.”
OBJ is listed as the No 10 free agent, and ahead of him of the list are two players who were with the Chiefs this past season: left tackle Orlando Brown and safety Tyrann Mathieu. ESPN projects both will sign with the Chiefs.
The Chiefs don’t currently have a ton of salary-cap space, per OverTheCap.com, but they’ll certainly have some options for free up more money to spend.
The free-agency signing period begins on March 16, and here is what other outlets are saying about the Chiefs.
Bleacher Report predicted the Chiefs would let Mathieu leave via free agency.
Yardbarker’s Seth Trachtman thinks the Chiefs will sign Steelers wide receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster, who nearly came to KC last offseason.
Mathieu is predicted to go to Baltimore, while defensive end Frank Clark (back to Seattle) and Melvin Ingram (Rams) would end up elsewhere in this forecast.
