It was almost all good news for the Buffalo Bills when they beat the Chiefs 38-20 on Sunday night.

A lightning delay forced the teams off the field for more than hour, and NBC Sports’ Michele Tafoya reported the Bills players weren’t thrilled about the food in the locker room.

“They are eating sandwiches, although a couple have complained to me that there’s too much peanut butter on the sandwiches, it’s like 70-30 with the jelly so they’re not enjoying those as much, but basically keeping it, you know, businesslike but very relaxed,” Tafoya said during the break in play.

Al MIchaels then sent the coverage back to the studio where former Saints/Chargers quarterback Drew Brees and ex-Colts and Buccaneers coach Tony Dungy discussed what goes into a good peanut-butter-and-jelly sandwich.

“To me, the real question is it grape jelly or strawberry jelly?” Brees said. “And then how are we cutting it? Are we cutting it square or rectangular?”

Dungy added: “And white bread or whole wheat?”

That’s a strange topic, right? But it was a weird night, and the Great PB&J Debate soon went viral.

Among the news outlets to discuss that exchange and the proper amount of peanut butter and jelly on a sandwich were NPR, CBS Mornings and USA Today.

And, on his weekly show on KCSP (610 AM), Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes was asked Monday by Carrington Harrison about making the perfect peanut butter and jelly sandwich. Unlike the unnamed Bills players, he favors more peanut butter.

“I’m definitely more peanut butter, man,” Mahomes said. “Like you said, jelly kind of to me is just the kind of accent that can give me a little different flavor to make it a PB&J, but definitely more peanut butter.”

Mahomes also talked about what he did during the lengthy delay in the game. He mentioned a few of the things he noshed on in the locker room.

“I was just kind of trying to stay hydrated,” Mahomes said. “You know, staying warm, moving around as much as possible. I think I ate some like peanut butter pretzels and like a banana or something like that. It wasn’t too serious.

“I was just trying to ... give myself enough to get us through the rest of the game. So yeah, definitely a weird situation but hopefully we can find a way to be better next time we’re in it.”
