Chiefs’ Patrick Mahomes has put up monster numbers in season openers

The Kansas City Chiefs open the 2020 NFL football season Thursday and history suggests quarterback Patrick Mahomes should have a big game.

Although it’s a small sample size, Mahomes has been dominant in season-opening games for the Chiefs.

In the Chiefs’ 38-28 win at the Los Angeles Chargers on Sept. 9, 2018, Mahomes completed 15 of 27 passes for 256 yards with four touchdowns and no interceptions.

A year later, he was even better. In the Chiefs’ 40-26 win at the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sept. 8, 2019, Mahomes completed 25 of 33 passes for 378 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions.

Mahomes’ totals in those two games: 40 completions in 60 attempts (67%), 634 yards, seven touchdowns and no interceptions. That’s a 140.6 passer rating.

James Palmer of the NFL Network said that is the highest career week one passer rating among quarterbacks with at least two opening-game starts since 1950.

Palmer also noted how well Mahomes has played in September games:

Chiefs fans certainly hope see more of that on Thursday night against the Houston Texans.
