Seven Chiefs land on ESPN ranking of top 100 players for 2020 season
Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes didn’t crack the top three of the NFL 100 list this summer, but he’s No. 1 on ESPN’s ranking.
ESPN released its list of the top 100 NFL players for the 2020 season and seven Chiefs players made the cut, tying for the most of any team.
Here is how ESPN came up with its list: “We asked a panel of 46 ESPN NFL experts to rate players based on how good they will be in the 2020 season in comparison to their peers. Emphasis was entirely on expectations for the upcoming season — that means injured safety Derwin James won’t make the list — and predicting potential greatness, rather than past performance, career résumé or positional value. From those ratings, we were able to rank the best of the best, 1 to 100.”
Because the rankings are based on what is expected to happen this season, it seems a good sign that seven Chiefs are among the top 100.
ESPN included projections for each player, and the experts are expecting big things from Mahomes, who moved up one spot after being No. 2 a year ago in the rankings.
“He has played 36 games in his career, including the postseason, and never lost by more than one score or posted a Total QBR below 50 in a game,” ESPN wrote. “In other words, Mahomes has never had a below-average game.”
At No. 11 is Chiefs receiver Tyreek Hill, while tight end Travis Kelce is No. 17, defensive lineman Chris Jones is No. 29, safety Tyrann Mathieu is No. 36, offensive lineman Mitchell Schwartz is No. 72 and defensive end Frank Clark is No. 85.
