Reds broadcaster uses homophobic slur during Wednesday afternoon game at KC Royals
Baseball fans were calling for Fox Sports Ohio broadcaster Thom Brennaman to be punished after he appeared to utter a homophobic slur on the air Wednesday.
Apparently unaware that his microphone was on, Brennaman was deep in a conversation with someone when he said: “One of the (expletive) capitals of the world.”
The context wasn’t known, but a shot of Kauffman Stadium was on the screen when the hot mic caught the comment.
It was during the first game of a doubleheader between the Reds and the Kansas City Royals.
Here is the video and be aware of the slur:
During the second game of the doubleheader, Brennaman made an on-air apology about the slur while also calling a home run.
Brennaman apologized to his bosses, to the Reds, Fox Sports Ohio, to the people he works with and to anyone he’s offended. He begged for forgiveness and then left the broadcast.
The Reds put out a statement after Brennaman apologized. The team said: “He was pulled off the air, and effective immediately was suspended from doing Reds broadcasts. We will be addressing our broadcasting team in the coming days.“
