Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes on the seven toughest defensive players he’s faced
In addition to an electric arm, Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes has an incredible memory. So it’s no surprise he hasn’t forgotten some of his bad moments in the Chiefs’ 54-51 loss to the Rams in the 2018 season.
Specifically, Mahomes remembers how well Rams defensive lineman Aaron Donald played that night. That’s why Donald is No. 1 on the list of the best defenders Mahomes has faced during his three seasons in the NFL.
Mahomes revealed his choices during an interview Tuesday with former Falcons/Eagles quarterback Michael Vick on Fox Sports.
Here are the seven who Mahomes mentioned and a bit of what he said about the players.
Aaron Donald, Rams. “I don’t know if I’ve ever been strip-sacked in my entire life and he strip-sacked me twice. Both of them they recovered in one game so I mean I was like ... we’ve got to get at least two people, four hands on him every single time. He’s for sure No. 1.”
Stephon Gilmore, Patriots. “Stephon Gilmore is a great corner. He’s someone that is real physical and he knows how to play the scheme. I think that’s another thing is he has the physical ability, but he’s also smart and he understands what you’re trying to do.”
Joey Bosa and Melvin Ingram, Chargers: “First, Joey Bosa, he’s a monster against the run and the pass, and then I think the dude who gets slept on is Melvin Ingram, and I think he’s getting a little more hype recently but that dude can go as well.”
Von Miller, Broncos: “Another guy who’s got the physical ability but also just smart. That dude knows exactly what you’re trying to do every single play, and you start making checks he’s already checking with you trying to change stuff up, and you’re like, ‘Man, let me know what I’m supposed to do it.’”
Justin Simmons, Broncos: “He’s kind of a little bit young dude, kind of coming on, got the franchise tag this last year. He’s another guy (who’s) smart. He does a good job covering some of our best players in the slot, he’s covered (Travis) Kelce, he’s cover all these different dudes. He does a good job with that as well as taking stuff away from over the top.”
Nick Bosa, 49ers: “I think a young dude that’s gonna be a monster, who I’ve already mentioned his brother is Nick Bosa. I’ve only played him one time, played him in the Super Bowl. You know, you’re going against a rookie, you heard all the hype, heard all the noise, but you’re like you’re still playing a rookie. How good could he be? We got to the Super Bowl, and I think he got me at least once with a sack and he stripped me once as well, but he was always around.”
Mahomes also talked about his new car, buying into the Royals ownership group, his charity and other subjects in the interview:
