Reds’ Trevor Bauer shows his home testing, what happens after inconclusive COVID test
Cincinnati Reds pitcher Trevor Bauer wears his heart on his sleeve, which means you sometimes see him step off the mound and fire a ball over the center field wall at Kauffman Stadium.
But it also means fans get to see peer inside the closed doors of Major League Baseball.
This season Bauer has been sharing video logs that show what happens on road trips, during rain delays and COVID-19 testing.
The latter was a source of frustration for Bauer, who had to scramble following an inconclusive result.
“Well here I was thinking today is going to be a very relaxing, recovery filled day and boy, was I wrong,” Bauer said. “I woke up at 11:50, had a good night’s sleep in, woke out to text that said ‘Call me when you wake up.’ So I called my trainer and he said, ‘I have an inconclusive COVID test.
“So then they want me to take a 15-minute COVID test, but those are known to show false positives quite often, so now I’m stuck between a rock and a hard place because if I take a quick test and it shows it’s positive, then I’m going to be out for like a week. If I take a non-quick test, then we’re going to have to expedite the results and I can’t get to the field until the results come back that show I’m shown definitively, conclusively negatively.
“Let’s see, it’s 12:15 and I’m going to go in 45 minutes to the doctor’s office to take a conclusive or more conclusive — could still be wrong — test, and they have to try to expediate that but we don’t know when we’re going to get that back which means I can’t go to the field today, which sucks because if I can’t go to the field today, there’s no way I’m going to be able to pitch on Thursday. ...
“Yeah, so today’s a massive cluster already. I’ve been awake for like 20 minutes, I gotta go do my measurements because I still have to do my home screening and all my stuff and then get going to go to get something shoved up my nose and whatever else this is gonna entail. So let me go do that.”
In the video below, Bauer did the regular test, and the expedited results showed he didn’t have COVID-19.
Bauer also took his camera to the clubhouse, the team plane, the team hotel and other locations. The video also shows what the players go through each day (temperature checks, social distancing, etc.) during the pandemic.
