For Pete's Sake

Here’s how Kauffman Stadium looked with virtual fans in stands during Fox’s broadcast

The Royals picked a perfect night to snap out of their funk.

After scoring a total of 12 runs in the first five games of August, the Royals hit three home runs and thumped the Cubs 13-2.

The timing was perfect, because the game aired on Fox, meaning a national audience had the opportunity to see the Royals play their best game of the season.

Because it was a Fox Sports broadcast, there were virtual fans in the stands at Kauffman Stadium.

At the game, the stands were empty, of course, save for plastic cutouts of fans.

Royals second baseman Nicky Lopez could be heard calling for a pop-up, while the Cubs dugout resembled a high school team with lots of encouragement when teammates were batting.

When Whit Merrifield hit a home-run off the left-field foul pole in the second inning, the artificial fan noise increased slightly but cheering from the Royals’ dugout could be heard.

But for television viewers, a packed Kauffman Stadium of fake fans went crazy. This is what it looked like:

The Royals shared this clip of Jorge Soler’s mammoth home run that also shows the “fans:”
