ESPN host: Chiefs are set up to be first NFL team to claim a Super Bowl three-peat
The AFC East is home to the only teams that have ever appeared in three straight Super Bowls.
In the early 1970s, the Miami Dolphins lost Super Bowl VI, then won the championship the following two years. The Buffalo Bills went to four straight Super Bowls in the early 1990s and lost them all.
The New England Patriots sandwiched wins in Super Bowls LI and LIII around a loss to the Eagles in LII.
In the 1960s, the Green Bay Packers followed an NFL championship by winning the first two Super Bowls.
So a three-peat in the NFL hasn’t been done in the Super Bowl era, but ESPN’s Mike Greenberg thinks we’ll see it happen sooner rather than later.
After noting the difficulty of winning three straight championships in any sport, Greenberg gave the reasons why the Chiefs could make NFL history.
“Can Kansas City do it? The easy answer is yes. It all starts with the quarterback and Patrick Mahomes is already No. 1 all-time in passer rating, QBR, touchdown-to-interception ratio, yards per attempt and yards per game, and he’s 24 years old.,” Greenberg said Tuesday. “The last team to beat him by more than one possession was Iowa State. He’s never lost an NFL game by more than seven points.
“But wait, with this team, there’s much, much more. The Chiefs have drafted nine Pro Bowlers since Andy Reid got there in 2013. Travis Kelce was a third-round pick. Tyreek Hill fifth round. Damien Williams led them in rushing last year, he was undrafted. The Chiefs offense returns 10 of 11 starters from last year when they scored 117 points in three playoff games. The defense, which actually allowed the fewest points in the league the last six games of last season, also returns 10 of 11, plus the head coach is back and both coordinators.
“So how could you possibly bet against the team to win three in a row? Which I spell with a capital T, which rhymes with D, which stands for dynasty.”
Dream big, Chiefs fans.
By the way, the Cyclones beat Texas Tech 66-10 in what was the last time Mahomes lost by more than one score.
