Two-time Super Bowl champ: Chiefs’ biggest hurdle for repeating might be themselves
Former Broncos star quarterback John Elway capped his career by winning consecutive Super Bowl championships. A big reason for the grand finale for Elway, who also lost three Super Bowls, was running back Terrell Davis.
In the Broncos’ Super Bowl championship seasons of 1997-’98, Davis rushed for 3,758 yards and 36 touchdowns. He added another 1,049 yards rushing with 11 touchdowns in those two postseason runs.
Davis was on “The Pat McAfee Show” on Friday and discussed the Chiefs’ offense and their chances of winning another Super Bowl.
After talking about quarterback Patrick Mahomes’ greatness, Davis said opposing teams have to change their usual game plan when facing the Chiefs.
“(Mahomes has) already displayed and he’s already showing you what he can do,” Davis said. “This team was down double digits — let me just make this clear — double digits in all three of their playoff games. Double digits. (It’s) unheard of. They came back and won every single one of them. It’s not about you having a good defense anymore against this team, you better be able to match them with your firepower.
“You better be getting the same explosive players, you better have that in mind. When you play them you better think we have to put 40 on the board, and that still might not be enough. But that has to be the mentality.”
As for the Chiefs winning a second straight Super Bowl, Davis said Kansas City’s biggest foe might be itself. That is, the Chiefs can’t rest on their laurels.
“I’ve won a championship, I won two, but we won back-to-back,” Davis said. “The most difficult thing to do is to do back-to-back because not only are people playing you different, but you sometimes take it for granted ... and you get complacent. You might feel like because we showed up we’re going to win this game. To me, that’s probably the biggest thing for them is to make sure they don’t get full or get complacent where they are. If they stay hungry, they’ll be a tough team to beat.”
