Video breaks down Chiefs’ turning point in Super Bowl: the ‘Wasp’ play on 3rd and 15

One unexpected benefit from Super Bowl LIV has been the flood of fantastic videos from NFL Films.

We’ve seen full game highlights with mic’d-up players, emotional postgame moments between the Chiefs and their fathers and now this: A detailed look at the pivotal play from the Chiefs’ 31-20 victory.

Screengrab of NFL Films Twitter video

Down 10 points and facing third and 15 from their own 35-yard line, quarterback Patrick Mahomes delivered the game’s signature moment with a long pass to Tyreek Hill.

It’s called 2-3 Jet Chip Wasp, and NFL Films had an incredible breakdown of the play. Some (not all) of the facts revealed in the video:

  • How the Chiefs used it a year earlier
  • How unlikely it was the 49ers would give up such a play
  • The adjustment Mahomes made after the snap
  • The reaction from the 49ers sideline
  • That Mahomes threw his longest completion of the year

The video is 10 minutes in length, but it’s well worth it (unless you’re a 49ers fan):
