Fox Sports’ Colin Cowherd: ‘The league wants Kansas City to be the next dynasty’
A Twitter map of the United States shows that, among the NFL’s four conference finalists, the Chiefs are the rooting choice in 10 states
As for Fox Sports’ Colin Cowherd, he thinks the NFL quietly will be pulling for the Chiefs against the Tennessee Titans in Sunday’s AFC Championship Game.
The reason? The Chiefs’ high-powered offense.
Cowherd started a segment on the Chiefs by ticking off a number of reasons he believes Titans quarterback Ryan Tannehill is essentially another Andy Dalton, the Bengals quarterback.
“So the question, of course, who do you want to see in the Super Bowl, the Kansas City Chiefs or Andy Dalton?” Cowherd said. “I think the answer is obvious. It’s obvious to Fox. We’d like to see (Patrick) Mahomes in there, we would, I’m not lying. So would America, so would the NFL, and so would my eyes.
“Andy Dalton hurts my eyes, Ryan Tannehill, not great for my eyes. I say that as a son of an optometrist. If you really look at what Kansas City is, Kansas City is what the NFL wants the league to look like.”
Cowherd went on to explain that the NFL has changed its rules to protect offensive players, a clear indication (in his mind) of why the Chiefs are the league’s favorite. Last week’s 51-31 victory over the Texans in an AFC Divisional Playoff game was the type of thing the NFL craves, Cowherd believes.
“So the league is telling you: we want you to look like Kansas City,” Cowherd said. “We want you to be able to be down 24-nothing, and it doesn’t matter. We want the games to be close.”
With New England’s dynasty (maybe) coming to end, Cowherd thinks the NFL would embrace the Chiefs to fill the void. That begins with Sunday’s game.
“The Chiefs are ‘The Avengers.’ Tennessee is an artsy film that purists like,” Cowherd said. “The league wants Kansas City to be the next dynasty or something that looks like Kansas City. Clever schemes, traditional powerhouse, Kansas City, Arrowhead, great fans, fastest show on turf. Getting the ‘Monday Night Football’ game against the Rams and people talk about it ... for months. This is what the league is trying to do by changing its rules: speed on the outside, big arm in the pocket, likable relatable kid ... the Chiefs are what league wants it to look like. It really is.”
