MLS rescinds Dom Dwyer’s red card after Sporting KC appeal
The first ejection of Dom Dwyer’s career was wiped from the slate Tuesday. And along with it, a one-game suspension was revoked, too.
Major League Soccer rescinded the red card shown to Dwyer late in Sporting Kansas City’s loss in Orlando on Sunday, which had included a mandatory one-game suspension.
Dwyer was issued the card — and subsequent automatic ejection — in the 87th minute Sunday after a skirmish with Orlando City defender David Mateos, who embellished a shove to the chest by holding his face. The play occurred away from the action, behind referee Jair Marrufo.
Sporting KC submitted an appeal to the league, and the rare overturn Tuesday required a unanimous decision from an independent review panel, which consists of one representative each from the U.S. Soccer Federation, Canadian Soccer Association and Professional Referees Organization.
As a result, Dwyer will be available Friday, when Sporting KC plays host to FC Dallas at 6 p.m. at Sporting Park. Sporting KC is 0-4-1 across its past five matches, dropping to a fifth-place tie in the Western Conference with 41 points. FC Dallas has vaulted into second place in the West with three straight victories. The top six teams will make the postseason.
Dwyer has nine goals in 24 matches this season after scoring 22 goals for the club in 2014.
After winning the appeal, Sporting KC retained one ejection appeal for the remaining of the 2015 season
