A victory in last weekend’s game at Seattle may have halted a season-long downward spiral for Sporting KC, which became the final MLS team to win a game in 2023 by beating the Sounders.

But the club’s awful start to 2023 overall continues a trend from last year, when just one team in the league’s Western Conference finished with fewer points than Sporting. What are the reasons for this year’s slow start, and how much responsibility falls on the shoulders of manager and sporting director Peter Vermes?

Vermes is the constant with the franchise, which has been among the most successful in MLS history. He’s the longest-tenured coach in the league. But some fans chanted “Vermes out” at the team’s most recent home game.

On today’s episode of SportsBeat KC, The Star’s sports podcast, columnist and former Sporting beat writer Sam McDowell discusses his recent interview with Sporting KC principal owner Mike Illig and team president and CEO Jake Reid, and what steps could be taken to improve the team’s fortunes.
