Peter Vermes is not happy that Orlando City is publicly expressing interest in Dom Dwyer

Orlando City SC coach Adrian Heath has made no secrets about his desire for a reunion with Sporting Kansas City forward Dom Dwyer, but Sporting KC certainly wishes Heath would keep that desire under wraps.

At least publicly.

Two days after Heath used his radio show to express an interest in acquiring Dwyer, Sporting KC coach Peter Vermes conveyed displeasure in those comments — and, most specifically, the forum in which they were made.

“They’re uncalled for,” Vermes said. “... I think it’s unfortunate that it comes out publicly like that, because what it could do — and it hasn’t, which is great — but what it could do within a team is disrupt it. And I think that’s the unprofessional aspect of it that I don’t appreciate.”

Dwyer spent the second half of the 2013 MLS season on loan with Orlando City, and he scored 15 goals in 13 matches, including four in the club’s 7-4 win in the USL-Pro championship match. A year later, he broke Sporting KC’s franchise scoring record with 22 goals during the 2014 season.

On Tuesday, Heath was asked during his weekly radio show if his club was interested in bringing Dwyer back to Orlando, which is in its first season in MLS.

“I don’t know what you want me to say about Dom. If we ring Kansas City one more time, we’re going to get reported to the league from Peter Vermes,” Heath said. “By the way, there’s no secret that Dom wants to be here. We’ve tried to get him here. We’ve done everything we can. Unfortunately, we can’t do it yet. But we will keep trying. I think this is his spiritual home. He wants to come back. We’d love to have him. But we’ll have to wait and see how long it takes before we can do it.”

Dwyer denied an interview request after Sporting Kansas City’s training session Thursday.

Vermes said Dwyer has not requested a trade through the club. Dwyer signed a multi-year extension during the offseason, and he bought a house in Kansas City earlier this year.

“Dom understands this is where he is, and this is where he wants to be,” Vermes said. “He’s been here, and he’s been successful here.”

Vermes said he has not spoken with Heath since the comments were made. And the two coaches have not spoken about Dwyer as often as Heath implied, Vermes said.

“When the comment comes out that they’re calling us all the time, that’s not true,” Vermes said. “Over the course of (time) since we loaned the player, I’ve received for sure three, maybe four, (calls) in two, three years. I don’t know if that matches the comment.”

Sporting KC plays Orlando only once this season — a Sept. 13 match at the Orlando Citrus Bowl.
