The Kansas City Current had several roster openings heading into the 2026 season, and they have seemingly been filled with college products.
The Current announced the signing of Gianna Paul on Friday morning to a three-year contract. She’s a two-time NCAA All-America forward out of Alabama, where she holds the program record for career goals.
Paul scored 40 goals in her four years there. She was an impact player from the beginning of her freshman year, when she was named SEC Freshman of the Year and earned second-team All-SEC honors. In her next three years, she was named first-team all-SEC.
United Soccer Coaches named her an All-American for her junior and senior campaigns, in which she notched 24 goals and eight assists in 42 games.
“Gianna is a dynamic forward who is skilled technically and tactically,” said Current general manager Ryan Dell. “She had a remarkable collegiate career at Alabama, where she rewrote the record book, and we’re confident she’ll use that experience as a springboard to a successful pro career.”
Paul is KC’s third college signing, along with University of Washington defender Kolo Suliafu and UCLA defender Meila Brewer, who were announced in the last week. Suliafu was signed to a one-year deal and Brewer to a three-year deal.
Brewer, who is just 16 years old, is a local product from Overland Park and attended Blue Valley High School. At the club soccer level, she played for the KC Athletics. She was named to the Best XI at the 2024 ECNL National Championships.
In addition to representing KC with the Athletics, she has represented the U.S. with the U-15, U-16 and U-17 youth national teams, starting all four games at the 2025 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup.
To attend UCLA, she reclassified almost two full years ahead — going from the 2027 class to 2025. She started in eight of nine appearances for the Bruins. In four of those starts, she helped record shutouts.
She is believed to be the youngest student-athlete in UCLA history.
“I’m grateful for the doors God continues to open,” Brewer said. “Coming back home means a lot to me, and I’m looking forward to learning, competing and contributing however I can to help the club continue to grow and succeed.”
Suliafu also joins the back line after four years at the University of Washington. She made 81 appearances in that time, helping post 34 shutouts, and in 2024 and 2025 helped the team reach program bests for goals allowed in a season (12 in 2024) and shutouts (12 in 2025).
She was named the Big Ten defender of the year in 2025, as she helped lead the Huskies to an Elite Eight appearance.
KC Current roster departures, including Alex Pfeiffer
Some of these roster spots have been made available by a few departures from the team’s roster. On Christmas Eve, the Current announced the exits of Regan Steigleder and Tyler McCamey, as well as the mutual parting of ways with Alex Pfeiffer.
Steigleder made just four appearances spanning 100 minutes in NWSL action during the last two seasons. McCamey was signed as the team’s third goalkeeper when Clare Gagne went on the Season Ending Injury list, having sustained a concussion in training.
Pfeiffer’s departure is the most intriguing. The youngster scored in her first appearance — becoming the youngest player to score in NWSL history — with the fifth and decisive goal in the opening match at CPKC Stadium. She would later tear her ACL that season and wasn’t reintegrated with the first team until late this summer. She is one of the highest-rated youth prospects in American soccer.
In addition, the club announced weeks back that Hailie Mace and Laurel Ivory would not be back for the 2026 season. Mace has signed with the Orlando Pride and Ivory with the expansion team Boston Legacy FC.
