The Kansas City Current soccer club is undergoing a massive shakeup in leadership less than a week after a stunning first-round loss in the National Women’s Soccer League playoffs.

The team announced Friday afternoon that Vlatko Andonovski would step back from his head-coaching role and become solely the club’s sporting director.

In addition to the reshuffling of Andonovski’s duties, the team on Friday announced that it has parted ways with general manager Caitlin Carducci. Ryan Dell has assumed the role of GM for the Current.

Andonovski, the 49-year-old former U.S. Women’s National Team head coach, had held both titles — Current head coach and sporting director — since his hire in Kansas City two years ago. In a Friday news release, Current co-owners Chris and Angie Long said having separate individuals hold the executive soccer roles is part of the next phase of a “long-planned staffing model.”

“To continue the club’s upward and global trajectory, we must put in place an organizational structure that reflects the growth of what we’re doing within the KC Current ecosystem and beyond,” the Longs said in the team’s news release. “These changes will allow us to further carry out our mission of staying at the forefront of women’s soccer globally.”

In an interview with ESPN, Andonovski said he knew all along that he would eventually shift to a role of full-time sporting director. According to ESPN’s reporting, those conversations intensified over the summer.

“I am really passionate about the long-term vision of the organization, which needs my full attention,” Andonovski told ESPN.

A search is underway for a new KC Current head coach, and Andonovski will be part of that process. This season he coached the Current to the NWSL Shield, a club first. The team finished with a record of 21-3-2, best in league history.

The Current’s postseason run was short-lived, however, with a loss to Gotham FC at home on Sunday.

Over Andonovski’s two seasons in charge, the Current posted a 37-6-9 record while winning every trophy except the NWSL championship.

As full-time sporting director, Andonovksi will work alongside the Current’s next head coach and likewise yet-to-be-named new head of player development. Andonovski will oversee player recruitment, roster strategy and scouting.

Dell’s role as general manager will include the salary cap, contract negotiations and player transfers. In addition, he will continue to oversee the Current’s operations department and youth development.

Dell was Racing Louisville’s GM in 2024 and he oversaw the hire of Beverly Yanez as head coach. Yanez eventually led Louisville to its first playoff appearance and was a coach of the year finalist — alongside Andonovski — this season.

“From day one, Ryan has been an incredible addition to our technical staff, immediately making us a better club through everything he touched, whether soccer operations or building new properties,” the Longs said in the release. “We collectively share a deep passion for making the Kansas City Current the best women’s football club in the world, and we are thrilled he accepted this promotion.”
