  • If placed on NFI list, Simmons would miss four games and free a roster spot.

The status of Kansas City Chiefs rookie left tackle Josh Simmons remains unclear.

As of last Friday, Simmons was expected to play in Week 6 against the Detroit Lions. But on Sunday, around 2 p.m. Central, the team — citing the “personal” designation — announced he was questionable. Three hours later, Simmons was downgraded to out.

Following Kansas City’s 30-17 victory, the team had little to say about his status. On Wednesday, head coach Andy Reid addressed the situation in his opening statement.

“As far as the Josh Simmons situation goes, I’m not going to comment on it,” Reid said. “(General manager Brett) Veach is handling everything there, and we’ll leave it at that.”

Reid declined to provide a timeline for Simmons’ return, and the rookie was not spotted during the brief portion of Wednesday practice open to the media.

It is uncommon for players to be placed on the Non-Football Injury (NFI) list midseason, but with Veach involved, that could be a possibility. If that happens, Simmons would be required to miss a minimum of four games, though it would open up a roster spot for Kansas City to sign or elevate an offensive lineman.

When it was his turn to speak to reporters, Patrick Mahomes followed Reid’s lead in keeping things in-house.

“I’ll keep conversations between us, but I’m always praying for him,” the quarterback said. “I pray for all my teammates, so I’m always praying for him, and I’ll just keep everything else private to us.”

In the minutes prior to Kansas City’s Week 5 game against the Jacksonville Jaguars, the Chiefs designated Simmons as questionable due to an illness before he ultimately played every snap.

With Simmons out against the Lions, Jaylon Moore started at left tackle, allowing three pressures on 40 pass-blocking snaps, per Pro Football Focus. According to NFL Operations, Moore surrendered no early pressures to Pro Bowl defensive end Aiden Hutchinson in 13 attempts. Should the situation stay unresolved, Moore is expected to start Sunday against the Las Vegas Raiders in Week 7.
