Behind the DET-KC matchup

Kansas City concludes its six-game stint without suspended receiver Rashee Rice in Sunday night’s prime-time matchup with Detroit. Rice has long been thought to be the missing piece for a return to the Chiefs’ trademark explosive offense — one capable of going toe to toe with heavyweights like the Lions.

Detroit enters the game boasting the league’s top scoring offense, featuring productive talent up and down the lineup. That includes receivers Amon-Ra St. Brown and Jameson Williams, tight end Sam LaPorta and the dynamic running back tandem of Jahmyr Gibbs and David Montgomery.

Three of Kansas City’s first five opponents made the playoffs last season, but the Lions and their high-octane attack may be Steve Spagnuolo’s greatest challenge yet.

According to the early-week injury report, Spagnuolo should be aided by the returns of both rookie defensive tackle Omarr Normnn-Lott and cornerback Kristian Fulton, a good thing as it will take all hands on deck to keep the Lions out of the end zone.

While the Chiefs appear fully healthy for the prime-time showcase, the Lions have several key injuries to watch. Detroit starting left tackle Taylor Decker missed the last game due to a lingering shoulder injury, and his replacement, second-year lineman Giovanni Manu, struggled against the Cincinnati Bengals.

Decker missed practice again on Wednesday as the team elevated Dan Skipper from the practice squad. Chiefs edge rusher George Karlaftis is capable of lining up on both sides, and Spagnuolo should look to exploit what could be a vulnerable area to attack the Lions’ front.

St. Brown (wrist), safety Kerby Joseph (knee) and cornerback Terrion Arnold (shoulder) all missed Wednesday’s practice. St. Brown and Joseph are worth monitoring as the week carries along. Arnold is not expected to play.

If Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs offense are to continue their upward trend following a 476-yard outing against the Jaguars, they will have to find a way to stop defensive end Aiden Hutchinson, who already has five sacks on the season. Hutchinson lines up on both sides of the line, so left tackle Josh Simmons and right tackle Jawaan Taylor will both need to be up for the challenge.

Without Rice over the first five games, receiver Tyquan Thornton stands as the team leader in receiving yards. Combined with steady protection, Thornton, Hollywood Brown and Xavier Worthy have allowed Mahomes to throw the ball downfield.

Mahomes is tied for the league lead with eight completions of 30 yards or more — already halfway to his 2024 total of 16. Running backs Isiah Pacheco and Kareem Hunt are coming off their best statistical outings of the season, performances the Chiefs hope they will replicate to control tempo and keep Detroit’s offense on the sideline.

Lions-Chiefs game prediction

When the Rice suspension came through in the preseason, I thought this was the game in which they would miss him the most.

I’m simply unsure if the Chiefs’ offense can compete with a scoring powerhouse like the Lions without him.

Since I think that’s unlikely, I’m taking the Lions.

Winner: Lions 31, Chiefs 24
