For Chiefs fans who have attended games at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium, there is perhaps no more iconic sound than when the team moves the chains.

Stadium public address announcer Dale Carter would always inform fans that the yardage gained was enough for a “KANSAS CITY CHIEFS ... FIRST DOWN!”

But there will be someone new making that call this Sunday, as Carter announced Thursday he was leaving his job.

“Today I feel like an enormous weight has been lifted from me. I have informed the Kansas City Chiefs that I am resigning, effective immediately, as Stadium PA Voice of the Chiefs,” Carter wrote in a Facebook post.

“I have had an incredible 16+ year run that included 6 AFC Championship games at Arrowhead... a record 5 in a row! I truly enjoyed being the ‘Audio Propagandist’ for the team I love... doing everything I could do (within the rules) to give our guys an advantage!!”

Carter said the Chiefs have asked him to alter the way he calls games, and he has not felt comfortable with the changes the team proposed.

Despite that, Carter said he harbored no ill will toward the Chiefs. He apparently will continue to work on his morning show at KFKF (Country 94.1).

“Going into the playoffs last year they asked me to make a significant change to how I’ve called the games (which I tried to do, even though I disagreed with it),” he wrote. “Going into this season they wanted a further adjustment that crosses my red line. Frankly, it just hasn’t been as fun as it was. It takes a lot of time away from my family, especially around the holidays. This just feels like the right time.

“I have tremendous respect for the organization and am thankful I got to do this! My life is incredibly blessed with a loving wife, amazing kids and grandkids. My work life is full too with KFKF, Q104, my podcast, Blue Springs/Blue Springs South High School football broadcasts and, now, a run for Jackson County Legislature. Leaving the Chiefs will give me a little breathing space!”

Carter noted that he started in 1995 when the Chiefs had his namesake on the defense: defensive back Dale Carter.

“I went from buying tickets to select games to a season ticket holder to Voice of Arrowhead,” he said. “I now return to fan status!”

Carter last month shared a photo of where he calls games at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium.
