Unprecedented 3-peat? Kansas City Chiefs could join these teams with Super Bowl win
The Kansas City Chiefs are trying to accomplish a feat never before achieved in the Super Bowl era.
The Chiefs are trying to win their third straight Super Bowl championship, as Kansas City faces the Philadelphia Eagles on Feb. 9 in Super Bowl LIX. My colleague and Star columnist Sam McDowell explains it well in his story:
According to McDowell, the odds of the Chiefs’ three-peat — back at the beginning — were something like 1 in 1,231. Now, the Chiefs are one game away.
KC will enter rarefied air with a win a week from Sunday. Here’s a look at the teams that have three-peated (or more) in other major North American sports leagues...
MLB three-peats
This list is dominated by the New York Yankees, home to 27 World Series titles. They’ve three-peated three different times over the years.
1936-39 (four-peat): New York Yankees
1949-53 (five-peat): New York Yankees
1972-74: Oakland Athletics
1998- 2000: New York Yankees
NBA three-peats
The NBA is the last league to have a team complete a three-peat, most recently the Los Angeles Lakers in the early 2000s. Interestingly, the teams that have won three straight are all historic franchises that had at least one (arguably) top-10 player ever on the team.
Here are the three franchises to accomplished the feat.
1952-54: Minneapolis Lakers
1959-66 (Eight-peat): Boston Celtics
1991-93: Chicago Bulls
1996-98: Chicago Bulls
2000-02: Los Angeles Lakers
NHL three-peats
Like the NBA, three-peats (or more) have been more common in the NHL. That said, it’s been more than 40 years since an NHL team won at least three consecutive championships.
1947-49: Toronto Maple Leafs
1956-60 (Five-peat): Montreal Canadiens
1962-64: Toronto Maple Leafs
1976-79 (Four-peat): Montreal Canadians
1980-83 (Four-peat): New York Islanders
WNBA three-peat
Only one team has won three consecutive championships in the WNBA, but the team was disbanded in 2008 for financial reasons.
1997-2000 (Four-peat): Houston Comets.
