Chiefs’ list of inactive players in Denver officially includes Mahomes, Kelce, Jones
Patrick Mahomes walked along the sideline at Empower Field at Mile High before Sunday’s Chiefs-Broncos game at Empower Field at Mile High in Denver.
But instead of beginning his typical warm-up routine, he took a seat on the bench to visit with some of the Chiefs’ coaches..
Before kickoff, Mahomes was officially declared inactive for the game. So were six other Kansas City regulars: tight end Travis Kelce, running back Isiah Pacheco, cornerback Trent McDuffie, defensive end George Karlaftis, tackle Jawaan Taylor and defensive tackle Chris Jones.
The Chiefs were expected to rest multiple starters for the Week 18 game. That’s been coach Andy Reid’s normal practice when the team has clinched its playoff position.
It also happened in 2013, 2017, 2020 and 2023.
The Chiefs (15-1) have clinched the top seed in the AFC playoffs and will advance directly into the Divisional Round on Jan. 18 or 19.
Sunday’s game has playoff meaning for the Broncos. Win, and Denver will be in the playoffs for the first time since 2015.
By not playing, Mahomes ends the regular season with 26 touchdowns, 11 interceptions and 3,928 passing yards.
Kelce finishes the regular season with 97 receptions, 823 yards and three touchdowns.
Jones has five sacks.
