Andy Reid updates Chiefs’ Patrick Mahomes, Hollywood Brown availability & left tackle

All signs point to Patrick Mahomes taking the field Saturday as the Chiefs starting quarterback.

On Thursday, Andy Reid all but named Mahomes the starter for the home game against the Houston Texans.

“He worked out this week — full — and will most likely end up playing,” Reid said.

Mahomes suffered a mild high ankle sprain in the fourth quarter of last week’s victory at the Cleveland Browns. Backup Carson Wentz finished the game, taking his first snaps of the season.

Mahomes hasn’t missed a start for an injury since 2019.

Another clue that he’s the starter against the Texans: He’s not on the team’s injury report.

Also, Reid said there was “a good chance” wide receiver Marquise “Hollywood” Brown will make his regular-season debut for the Chiefs this weekend.

Brown, signed as a free agent, suffered a dislocated clavicle on the first play of the Chiefs’ preseason, at the Jacksonville Jaguars.

“There’s a good chance (he’ll play),” Reid said. “He’s done a nice job. He’s been able to run, keep himself in running shape.”

At left tackle, Reid said players rotated this week, including Joe Thuney. The Pro Bowl guard started last week’s game at tackle with Mike Caliendo getting his first NFL start at guard.

Thuney became the fourth player to start at left tackle for the Chiefs this season. The previous week, recently acquired D.J. Humphries started but suffered a hamstring injury and didn’t finish the game. Wanya Morris had started the previous 10 games.

Humphries didn’t practice this week, but Reid said it was possible for him to return for the next game, on Christmas Day at the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Humphries and safety Chamarri Conner, who is in the concussion protocol, are listed as out for Saturday’s game.
