Why Chiefs’ Patrick Mahomes was the ultimate decoy on razzle-dazzle play vs. Patriots

The Kansas City Chiefs got crazy-creative with their opening touchdown in a 27-17 road victory over the New England Patriots on Sunday.

In this video, KC Star reporter Jesse Newell and Brett Taveau (author of the Chiefs book “Unpacking Greatness” and a longtime high school offensive coordinator) take a closer look at Jerick McKinnon’s four-yard touchdown pass to Rashee Rice that drew inspiration from the 1940s.

It turns out the Chiefs’ wrinkles — from a different snapper to quarterback Patrick Mahomes starting in a three-point stance — did more than discombobulate the Patriots before the play. Mahomes’ movement also froze a bevy of defenders, which led to a running lane so big that one KC player struggled to find someone to block.
