What went wrong in Kansas City Chiefs’ loss to the Detroit Lions: game tracker

The Kansas City Chiefs’ quest to repeat as Super Bowl champions hit a rocky start at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium on Thursday.

Playing without tight end Travis Kelce and defensive tackle Chris Jones, the Chiefs failed on two potential go-ahead drives in the fourth quarter, falling to Detroit 21-20. The Chiefs’ defense allowed only two touchdowns in Jones’ absence, but a rough offensive showing — that included a tipped ball for a pick-six — was the story of the game.

The Chiefs’ grade card (via Blair Kerkhoff)? It had a couple F’s for the offense.

As mentioned, there were plenty of storylines for the Chiefs heading into their season opener, including a pair of notable happenings off the field. The Chris Jones holdout has continued into the regular season — and he watched Thursday’s game from the stands. Meanwhile, Kelce (knee injury) was officially ruled out about 90 minutes before kickoff.

Nevertheless, Thursday’s game produced plenty of exciting moments, including a pregame banner reveal for KC’s Super Bowl LVII victory. Take a look back at the action as it happened with The Star’s live blog from the season opener against the Lions...
