Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts is the latest to wear the robe of highest-paid player in the NFL. The team announced a five-year contract extension on Monday worth $255 million, according to several reports.

The $51 million that Hurts will be paid annually makes him the league’s highest-paid player in terms of annual value, and for that he received a tip of the cap from his counterpart in Kansas City.

“First off, congrats to him. He deserves it,” Mahomes said. “He plays the position the right way. He goes about his business the right way, and that’s why they were in the game, the Super Bowl. He played a great game in the Super Bowl and proved a lot of people wrong, people who were still doubting him.”

In Super Bowl LVII, Hurts became the first quarterback to rush for three touchdowns. That matched the most rushing touchdowns in a Super Bowl by a player at any position. He also passed for 304 yards and a touchdown and scored on a two-point conversation.

But that wasn’t enough to beat Mahomes and the Chiefs, who came away 38-35 victors. Mahomes was named the game’s MVP.

Hurts will receive $179.3 million in guaranteed money, second most in league history behind Deshaun Watson’s $230 million guaranteed contract with the Cleveland Browns.

Hurts, who in his third NFL season, finished second to Mahomes in the MVP race. He’s led the Eagles to the playoffs in both of his years as a full-time starter.

In 2020, Mahomes became the player with the highest annual contract value when he signed a 10-year, $450 million deal with the Chiefs.
