The Chiefs started their offseason workout program Monday, and it is being done remotely.

Quarterback Patrick Mahomes is in Texas where he has been working out with the Chiefs’ pass catchers. Even though he’s not in Kansas City, Mahomes heard the news of the shooting of 16-year-old Ralph Yarl.

Yarl, who is Black, had gone to pick up his younger brothers from a friend’s house in the Northland on Thursday night but went to the wrong residence. A man opened the door and shot Yarl twice, including once in the head, a family member said.

Mahomes said Monday in a conference call with reporters that he’s praying for Yarl.

“First off, I just want to say my prayers and support are for Ralph and his recovery,” Mahomes said. “You never want these situations to happen. But especially from the details that I’ve gotten from it, it seemed like it should have never even happened.

“It should have been an easy kind of conversation and both people go on their ways and this kid being able to pick up his family members and being with his family right now and not in the hospital. And so my prayers are for him first and his recovery.”

Yarl, who is a junior at Staley High School, was released from the hospital on Sunday and is being cared for at home.

Mahomes hopes the person who shot Yarl is held accountable.

“Hopefully the justice system does right by him and everyone involved and we’re able to not have to have these conversations and we’re able to hold each other accountable for our actions,” Mahomes said. “And so obviously more and more details are hopefully going to come out and he makes a full recovery, and then the justice system does its part and that we’re all held accountable every single day.”
