Chiefs’ Kadarius Toney put in ‘spirited’ practice on Wednesday, will do more Thursday

The Chiefs appear relatively healthy on their injury report with one exception: wide receiver Kadarius Toney (hamstring, ankle) put in a limited practice.

But Chiefs coach Andy Reid on Thursday didn’t sound overly concerned about Toney ahead of Sunday’s game against the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl LVII.

“He did everything yesterday that was planned for him to do,” Reid said. “But he’s got more today, and we’ll see how he does.

“He was spirited yesterday (Wednesday), running around like crazy, so we’ll see how it works out today.”

Wednesday marked the first time that the Chiefs were required to annotate participation levels in practice, so Toney stood out among the seven listed players. Quarterback Patrick Mahomes (ankle), rookie running back Isiah Pacheco (wrist), wide receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster (knee), right guard Trey Smith (ankle), linebacker Willie Gay Jr. (shoulder) and running back Jerick McKinnon (ankles) practiced fully.

Toney was hurt in the AFC Championship Game and didn’t finish the Chiefs’ 23-20 victory against the Cincinnati Bengals. He didn’t practice during the bye week but returned to practice when the Chiefs arrived in Arizona.

The Chiefs would be shorthanded at the wide receiver position if Toney can’t play against the Eagles. The team currently has Toney, Smith-Schuster, Marquez Valdes-Scantling, Justin Watson and rookie Skyy Moore on its active 53-player roster.

Toney is the Chiefs’ primary punt returner.

The Chiefs later in the afternoon designated Toney as a full participant along with Mahomes, Pacheco, Smith-Schuster, Smith, Gay and McKinnon. The Chiefs added cornerback L’Jarius Sneed (knee) to the injury report as a limited participant.

The Chiefs will practice Thursday and Friday before finalizing their preparations for Super Sunday.
