Game highlights: Chiefs beat Texans 30-24 in overtime
The Chiefs travel to Houston today to take on the Texans at NRG Stadium.
KC and Houston have squared off 13 times, including the postseason, and the Chiefs hold an 8-5 edge in those games. Given the teams’ respective records, Sunday sets up well for the Chiefs (10-3), who opened the week as a double-digit favorite over the Texans (1-11-1).
Or does it?
“Listen, it’s a good football team, well coached,” Chiefs defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo said. “They still have players. I’ve been on both ends of the really good and guys are prideful in this league. They’re going to play, and nobody is going to walk out there and lay down. We don’t expect that.”
Whether the Texans meet Spagnuolo’s expectations and can hang with the Chiefs remains to be seen. But the Texans came close to defeating the Dallas Cowboys in Week 14, and the Chiefs are giving them proper respect.
Plus, if the Chiefs win today, they’ll clinch their seventh straight AFC West title and an eighth consecutive postseason berth.
Overtime score: 30 Chiefs, 24 Texans
Overtime opens with the 10th penalty on the Chiefs — a season high.
Mahomes is sacked on a third down. Texans ball. Mills fumbles, and Willie Gay pulls off a terrific recovery. It’s Chiefs ball. McKinnon runs it, and Chiefs win, 30-24.
Fourth-quarter score: 24 Chiefs, 24 Texans
Mahomes’ magic pulls Kansas City ahead on a scramble touchdown, and the Chiefs take the lead again. They complete the 2-point conversion, and it’s 24-21 Chiefs.
The Texans make a field goal, tying the game 24-24 with 5:11 remaining.
Mahomes runs (or swerves, we should say) for 14 yards and a first down. Butker misses a 51-yard field goal attempt, and the game is headed to overtime.
Third-quarter score: 16 Chiefs, 21 Texans
Pacheco opens the third quarter with some sturdy runs, picking up a first down for Kansas City. A back-and-forth from Mahomes to McKinnon to Mahomes to Smith-Schuster — and another first down. Then to Pacheco again, who picks up two first downs in a row. Kansas City is moving well, and Pacheco is figuring prominently again.
Butker makes a 27-yard field goal to push the Chiefs ahead, 16-14, for their first lead of the day.
Khalen Saunders swats down a Texans throw, the second of the game, and Kansas City gets the ball back on a 52-yard Houston punt.
Smith-Schuster takes a hard knock to the head, and the Chiefs are awarded a first down. McKinnon makes an 18-yard run, but a holding penalty on Smith-Schuster brings Kansas City back to second and 17. A slew of penalties for the Chiefs follows, and Smith-Schuster’s catch is ruled a fumble. Texans’ offense is back out.
There’s been five penalties on the Chiefs on this Texans drive — four of those were accepted and applied. A 13-yard touchdown pass puts the Texans in the lead, 21-16.
Mahomes finds Kelce to pick up 13 yards and a first down, closing out the third quarter.

Halftime score: 13 Chiefs, 14 Texans
JuJu Smith-Schuster and Noah Gray pick up two first downs. Mahomes to McKinnon — and touchdown, Kansas City. Extra point from Harrison Butker is good, and the Chiefs tie the game 7-7.
The Texans can’t get past a third down, and Kadarius Toney — back in after weeks out on injury — returns four yards. Chiefs fumble from Pacheco and a loose ball hands it right back to the Texans, though. Carlos Dunlap swats down a ball from Driskel, but Mills finds a wide-open empty field for a Texans touchdown. 14-7 Houston.
Mahomes is sacked hard after a snap slips through his fingers. Chiefs punt with 7:36 left in the half. Texans will punt back after they can’t move past a third down.
Classic Mahomes to Kelce — great catch, great throw — for a first down, but unnecessary roughness penalty on Kelce makes it a long first down. Noah Gray picks up another first down, then McKinnon. Chiefs are at the 44th yard line with two minutes till half.
Mahomes runs it for a first down, and Chiefs are first and goal with 20 seconds left. Mahomes connects with Valdes-Scantling for a Chiefs touchdown, but Butker misses the extra point. Chiefs still trail 13-14.
Shannon Sharpe congratulates Chiefs’ Travis Kelce for passing him in NFL record book
Kelce’s catch in the Chiefs’ first drive gave him 10,061 career receiving yards, 1 more than former Broncos star Shannon Sharpe had in his time with Denver and Baltimore.
Sharpe, who played from 1990-2003, is now a talk-show host on Fox Sports. He saw that Kelce moved ahead of him on the all-time list. Sharpe wrote a note on Twitter to Kelce.
First-quarter score: 0 Chiefs, 7 Texans
Travis Kelce picks up two first downs in the first few drives of Chiefs ball. Mahomes tries to connect with Marquez Valdes-Scantling on a third down, but the pass falls just short, forcing a punt and bringing the Texans to the 15 yard line.
Chiefs pressure the pocket on a Texans third down, handing the reins back to Mahomes — but Mahomes is sacked on the Chiefs first down. Valdes-Scantling is taken off the field after a big hit to be evaluated for a concussion. Chiefs punt again at fourth & 14, and Texans bring it to the 20 yard line.
Valdes-Scantling is cleared for play after heading to the tent for concussion protocol. The Texans pick up 36 yards to Chris Moore. Darius Harris commits a crucial pass interference foul on a Texans third down, handing them first and goal. And Texans pick up a touchdown for the first score of the game. Field goal is good, 0-7 Texans with one minute left in the first quarter.
Isiah Pacheco pulls off back-to-back big runs to take the Chiefs into the second quarter.
