NFL recognizes Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce as the AFC Offensive Player of the Week
Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce had a dominating performance in Week 11’s win over the Los Angeles Chargers.
The NFL took notice and on Wednesday morning named Kelce as the AFC Offensive Player of the Week, the second such honor in his accomplished career.
Kelce recorded six catches for 115 yards and three touchdowns, including the go-ahead score with less than a minute remaining in regulation, in the Chiefs’ thrilling 30-27 comeback win on Sunday Night Football.
It was a case of déjà vu for Kelce, who recorded his first career Offensive Player of the Week award in 2021 for his Week 15 performance against the Chargers. In that game, Kelce also produced the game-winning touchdown.
On Sunday night, Kelce accounted for three of the Chiefs’ seven explosive plays, defined as 20 or more yards, down the field, The three-time All-Pro tight end produced catches for 34, 32 and 27 yards, and finished the game averaging a head-turning 19.2 yards per catch.
Sunday night marked the 33rd time in his career that Kelce topped 100 yards receiving in a game, which passed Rob Gronkowski (32) for the most 100-yard receiving games by a tight end in NFL history.
Kelce is the fifth tight end to win the NFL’s weekly award multiple times, joining Pro Football Hall of Famer Shannon Sharpe (three), Alge Crumpler (two), Jimmy Graham (two) and Gronkowski (two).
Kelce becomes the third Chiefs player in 2022 to receive the NFL’s weekly recognition. Quarterback Patrick Mahomes (Week 1, Week 4) and rookie cornerback Jaylen Watson (AFC Defensive Player of the Week in Week 2) previously garnered the honors. Punter Tommy Townsend was named the AFC Special Teams Player of the Month for September.
The Chiefs are set to play host to the Los Angeles Rams this Sunday in Week 12 action at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium.
