So what are the chances Chiefs linebacker Willie Gay Jr. plays Sunday at the 49ers?
Linebacker Willie Gay Jr. is set to see his first action since serving a four-game NFL suspension.
Chiefs coach Andy Reid sounded optimistic Friday that Gay would play in Sunday’s game against the San Francisco 49ers at Levi’s Stadium.
“Pretty good chance, yeah,” Reid said.
Gay, who has received a roster exemption since returning Monday, has practiced all three days this week. And he impressed the coaching staff in spite of the time he has missed.
“He’s brought good energy and he’s taken all the reps,” Reid said. “He’s done a nice job.”
So Gay is on track to play, but the same can’t be said about cornerback Rashad Fenton.
While Reid stopped short of declaring Fenton out for Sunday’s Week 7 game, the cornerback missed a third straight day of practice Friday and may well sit out for a second straight game.
“His hamstring is getting better, but he’s not ready right now,” Reid said.
Fenton, who suffered the injury in Week 5, was observed Friday on the sideline without his helmet, watching teammates go through position drills during the portion of practice that was open to media.
The Chiefs later in the afternoon declared Fenton officially out for Sunday. Without Fenton, the Chiefs are likely to depend heavuly on rookie Joshua Williams for another week alongside L’Jarius Sneed and rookie Jaylen Watson.
Team officials had yet to say Friday whether first-round rookie cornerback Trent McDuffie would be activated this week from injured reserve. McDuffie, who hurt a hamstring in the Chiefs’ season opener at Arizona, returned to practice last week. He was observed on the practice field the past three days, but the Chiefs have until 3 p.m. Central on Saturday to decide whether to activate him for Week 7. The Chiefs do not play in Week 8.
“We’ll see,” Reid said.
Left guard Joe Thuney (ankle) and defensive end Mike Danna (calf) were observed on the practice field Friday. The duo was limited Thursday after not practicing Wednesday. The Chiefs later in the afternoon designated Thuney and Danna as questionable for Sunday’s game.
Rookie safety Bryan Cook (concussion) was also on the practice field. Cook, who didn’t play in Week 6, was limited Wednesday but practiced fully Thursday and Friday. The Chiefs did not assign a game designation on Cook, meaning he is available for full action.
