Kansas City Chiefs add kicker to practice squad following Harrison Butker’s injury
The Kansas City Chiefs added a kicker to the practice squad Tuesday.
KC signed former Jets kicker Matt Ammendola, the team announced. NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero said Ammendola won a kicker competition in Kansas City on Monday for the job against five other competitors.
Ammendola could be necessary based on the Chiefs’ injury situation with a quick-turnaround game against the Los Angeles Chargers coming Thursday. Starter Harrison Butker injured his plant-leg ankle slipping on the turf following the team’s first touchdown in a 44-21 win over Arizona and was given a projected “did not practice” designation on the team’s first injury report Monday for this week’s game.
Safety Justin Reid stepped in for Butker for most of the Arizona game, going 1-for-2 on extra points while also kicking off. Butker also came back on the field to hit a 54-yard field goal at the end of the first half with a one-step approach.
Ammendola, in his second year out of Oklahoma State, played in 11 games for the Jets a season ago, making 14 of 15 point-afters and 13 of 19 field goals. He kicked for the Houston Texans this preseason but was cut by the team in August.
