KC Chiefs waive 6 players, including WR Gehrig Dieter, ahead of weekend rookie minicamp
The Chiefs needed to make room on their roster after signing multiple undrafted free agents ahead of Saturday’s three-day rookie minicamp.
Wide receiver Gehrig Dieter, who has been on and off the Chiefs’ roster and practice squad since 2017, headlined a group of six players who were waived, according to Thursday’s NFL Transactions report.
Dieter, who signed a reserve/future deal in early February, spent time on the Chiefs’ practice squad over the years, including during the 2022 season. He has appeared in 10 regular-season games, mostly contributing on special teams, and has just two career catches for 32 yards.
The Chiefs drafted wide receiver Skyy Moore in the second round of last month’s NFL Draft and later signed undrafted rookie Justyn Ross, moves intended to fortify a position group that lost star Tyreek Hill via trade to Miami but added free agents Marquez Valdes-Scantling, JuJu Smith-Schuster and Corey Coleman.
In addition to Dieter, the Chiefs waived wide receiver Gary Jennings, tight ends Nakia Griffin-Steward and Josh Pederson, defensive tackle Lorenzo Neal and defensive end Jonathan Woodard.
It would not be surprising to see the Chiefs bring back a few of these players, especially Dieter, at some point during the offeason for depth at training camp.
