Kansas City Chiefs place franchise tag on left tackle Orlando Brown Jr., report says

A “likely” scenario is becoming reality.

The Chiefs on Monday are using the franchise tag on left tackle Orlando Brown Jr. ahead of Tuesday’s deadline, ESPN reported.

The tag, which carries a projected $16.5 million price tag, allows the Chiefs extra time to work on a long-term deal for Brown leading to the league’s mid-July deadline. If no deal is in place by the deadline, Brown will play the 2022 regular season under the franchise tender, provided he signs it.

Kansas City acquired Brown last offseason in a blockbuster trade with the Baltimore Ravens. The trade cost the Chiefs a 2021 first-round pick, third-round pick and fourth-round pick, plus a 2022 fifth-round pick. In addition to receiving Brown, the Chiefs got a 2021 second-round pick and a 2022 sixth-round pick from the Ravens.

Brown, 25, was a big piece of the Chiefs’ effort last offseason to rebuild the offensive line, which produced five new starters.

He started 16 regular-season games and missed one game with a calf injury in 2021. Brown turned in a strong season while protecting quarterback Patrick Mahomes’ blind side, earning a third straight Pro Bowl selection. His previous two Pro Bowl nods came in a Ravens uniform.
