Chiefs’ Mitchell Schwartz, Sammy Watkins don’t practice Wednesday; Chris Jones limited
With no significant injuries from last week’s game, the focus falls on three players as the Chiefs prepare to host the New York Jets on Sunday at Arrowhead Stadium.
Right tackle Mitchell Schwartz (back), wide receiver Sammy Watkins (hamstring) and defensive end Taco Chalrton (knee) didn’t play in the Chiefs’ 43-16 win over the Broncos in Week 7.
Of the three, two remains in the air for at least another day, however.
Chiefs head coach Andy Reid announced earlier Wednesday that Schwartz and Watkins were not expected to practice in addition to safety Armani Watts, who is sick.
Neither of the three players were observed on the field during the portion of practice open to the media..
Schwartz, who didn’t finish the game against the Buffalo Bills in Week 6, saw his impressive streak of 134 consecutive career starts come to an end last week. Veteran offensive lineman Mike Remmers filled in at right tackle and will continue in that role if Schwartz can’t play Sunday.
Watkins hasn’t practiced since suffering the hamstring injury in Week 5. But the Chiefs have effectively utilized Demarcus Robinson, Mecole Hardman and Byron Pringle in Watkins’ place alongside Tyreek Hill during Watkins’ absence in the past two games.
The Chiefs listed defensive tackle Chris Jones, who has been dealing with a groin injury this season, as a limited participant. Jones didn’t play in Week 4 after he suffered the injury in Week 3.
Charlton, who didn’t play in Week 7 because of a knee injury, returned to full practice Wednesday.
The Chiefs also listed left tackle Eric Fisher (shoulder), running back Darrel Williams (shoulder), guard Andrew Wylie (foot), defensive tackle Derrick Nnadi (ankle), center Austin Reiter (knee) and defensive tackle Khalen Saunders (elbow) as full participants.
Meanwhile, the Chiefs on Tuesday made two roster moves on the practice squad in advance of the Week 8 game against the Jets, releasing quarterback Jordan Ta’amu and designating offensive lineman Danny Isidora as a protected player.
Kansas City also made the latter move in Week 7 before eventually elevating Isidora to the active 53-player roster to provide depth against Denver with Schwartz down.
The Chiefs then made roster moves Wednesday by designating rookie defensive end Mike Danna (hamstring) to return from injured reserve and signing guard Bryan Witzmann to the practice squad. Danna can practice while remaining on injured reserve to give the Chiefs an opportunity to evaluate him for a potential return to the active roster.
For the Jets, quarterback Sam Darnold (right shoulder) and running back Frank Gore (hand) lead a list of seven players limited in practice.
The Jets designated wide receiver Breshad Perriman (concussion), safety Bradley McDougald (shoulder), kicker Sam Ficken (groin), offensive lineman Conor McDermott (illness) and linebacker Jordan Jenkins (ribs, shoulder) as not practicing.
McDougald played collegiately at Kansas and spent time with the Chiefs during the 2013 season.
