Chiefs are trimming their roster to 53 with Saturday cuts: Get tracker updates here

The Chiefs’ defense of their Super Bowl championship begins Thursday.

The players who will part of that initial roster, however, will be known Saturday. The Chiefs must establish their initial 53-player roster by 3 p.m.

They concluded training camp with 80 players, so there’s certainly work to be done.

The Star is tracking the players who did and did not make the team. Check back here throughout the day for updates.

• Defensive end Tershawn Wharton has made the Chiefs’ initial 53-man roster, per source. Wharton is an undrafted free agent from Division II program Missouri S&T.

• Tight end Nick Keizer will be a part of the Chiefs’ initial 53-man roster, according to a source. Keizer, who spent last season on the practice squad, as been part of the team’s 12 personnel package in training camp.

• The Chiefs are waiving defensive tackle Devaroe Lawrence, a source told The Star. Lawrence spent time on the Chiefs practice squad in 2019. He entered the league in 2017 out of Auburn with the Saints before playing for the Browns.

• The Chiefs are waiving rookie linebacker Omari Cobb, a source told The Star. Cobb joined the team as an undrafted free agent out of Marshall. He appeared to have a good training camp, so it wouldn’t surprise if he’s brought back on the practice squad should he clear waivers.

• The Chiefs are waiving quarterback Jordan Ta’amu, a source told The Star. Ta’amu played in the XFL earlier in the year before signing with the Chiefs after the XFL folded. Adding him to the practice squad makes sense: It will allow him more time to develop.

• Chiefs are waiving rookie safety Rodney Clemons, according to a source. Clemons joined the Chiefs as an undrafted free agent out of Southern Methodist.

• Chiefs are waiving tight end Daniel Helm, a source told The Star. Helm, whom the Chiefs claimed off waivers from San Francisco during training camp, could return to the practice squad if he clears waivers.

• Chiefs are waiving wide receiver Gehrig Dieter, a source told The Star. Dieter, a fan favorite, is a prime candidate to return on the practice squad.

• Jody Fortson, who made several plays during training camp, has been waived, a source told The Star. Fortson, a wide receiver, spent last season on the Chiefs’ practice squad and is a good candidate for that again, if he’s unclaimed during the waiver process.

• Chiefs are waiving rookie wide receiver Justice Shelton-Mosley, a source told The Star. Shelton-Mosley joined the team as an undrafted free agent out of Vanderbilt.

• The Chiefs waived running back Elijah McGuire, who spent time on the team’s practice squad in 2019, a source told The Star.

• The Chiefs waived rookie center/guard Darryl Williams, a source told The Star. Williams, who joined the Chiefs as an undrafted free agent out of Mississippi State, is a prime candidate for the practice squad ... if he clears waivers.

• The Chiefs have waived rookie wide receiver Maurice Ffrench, a source told The Star. An undrafted receiver from Pittsburgh, French caught 96 passes last year, breaking Larry Fitzgerald’s single-season record at Pitt. He also showed an ability to return kicks.

• The Chiefs released safety Adrian Colbert and running back DeAndre Washington, according to ESPN. Washington, a former college teammate of quarterback Patrick Mahomes, signed with the Chiefs in the offseason. Colbert joined the team during training camp.

• Chiefs released cornerback Chris Lammons and guard Ryan Hunter, according to Terez Paylor of Yahoo! Sports.

• Chiefs waived rookie wide receiver Kalija Lipscomb, the NFL Network reported. Lipscomb joined the Chiefs as an undrafted free agent out of Vanderbilit.

• Former Mizzou left tackle Yasir Durant has made the initial 53-man roster. Durant signed with the Chiefs as an undrafted free agent in April.

• The Chiefs also waived defensive end Breeland Speaks (their top draft choice in 2018), quarterback Matt Moore, defensive end Tim Ward, tackles Greg Senat and Jackson Barton, defensive lineman Braxton Hoyett, cornerback Lavert Hill and linebacker Darius Harris, the team announced after the 3 p.m. deadline.
